P.D. Pedro Mocarte, cantante de la catedral de Toledo. Pintado por Goya, su íntimo amigo ("P.D. Pedro Mocarte, singer at Toledo cathedral. Painted by Goya, his dear friend", on the back, not in Goya's hand).
This work came from the Edwards collection, in Paris, where it went under auction in 1860, being acquired by Raimundo & Luis de Madrazo. Before arriving at its current home it was in the possession of Archer M. Huntington, in New York.
Pedro Mocarte, (1740-1807) was a singer at Toledo cathedral.
This half-length portrait shows him against a neutral background, wearing a high-necked jacket, open waistcoat and white shirt. His tired face has a melancholy air about it.
It is interesting to look at the considerable differences between the brushstrokes used for the clothing, which are much faster and freer, and those employed in the face and on the head, where Goya appears to have taken more time.
According to Gudiol, the way in which the artist shares his psychological insight into the subject could not be any more intense or profound.
