Historia

Throughout the creative process of The Caprices, which had as their first germ some drawings from Notebook A and Notebook B and reached a greater definition of ideas in the series Dreams, Goya also produced numerous loose drawings. On Goya's death these drawings passed successively to his son Javier (+1754) and his grandson Mariano. They were acquired from him around 1861 by the collector and scholar Valentín Carderera. On his death in 1880 they were inherited by his nephew Mariano Carderera, from whom the Prado Museum bought them by virtue of a Royal Order of 12 November 1886.

Análisis artístico

The preparatory drawing for engraving no. 3, The bogeyman is coming from the series of The Caprices, does not show too many differences with respect to the final result. Goya has clearly defined the composition in which the mother can be seen with the two children in the same pose as in the print. In addition, Goya has taken care to capture the folds of the tunic that completely covers the figure in the centre of the scene. This drapery exercise must be related to some of the drawings made by Goya in the pages of the Italian Notebook. It is likely that the painter's skill in capturing the garments of this figure is the result of his attendance at the Scuola del Nudo or the Académie de France during his stay in Italy (1769-1771).
