Historia

This is the only known sketch of the three or four which Ceán asked Goya to carry out before producing the definitive canvas for Seville Cathedral.

It belonged to Pablo Bosch y Barrau, who bequeathed this piece to the State together with others from his collection. It was entrusted to the Prado Museum in 1916.

Análisis artístico

This sketch does not differ greatly from the final painting, although there are a few small differences, such as the absence of the image of the Syrian goddess. The rest of the traditional symbols associated with the saints are the same, as is their posture. The main difference, therefore, lies in the application of the paint: the sketch exhibits a much more impasto texture and simplified execution.
