Inscripciones
Por Goya 1827 ("By Goya 1827", on the back, not in Goya's hand).
Monogram of the Infante Sebastián Gabriel, formed by the crowned initials S and G (on the back).
Historia
This work belonged to the collection of Thomas Agnew, in London.
Análisis artístico
The work shows the face of a friar with a white beard, looking down as if immersed in thought, in front of a reddish-grey background.
According to Gudiol, the man's head recalls the effigies of saints Peter and Paul.
Like its companion piece, A Nun, the artist's expressionistic technique is very evident in this portrait, especially in the rendering of the beard, which resembles an unfinished smudge.
