This drawing, just like the set of preparatory drawings made for the other prints in the series, formed part of the Carderera collection before arriving at the Prado Museum, where it is currently housed.
This preparatory sketch, which Goya has executed with considerable precision, reveals very few differences compared with the etching for which it was made.
The artist uses light differently in the preparatory drawing, creating a brighter area in the centre of the composition, possibly a device intended to pick out the French soldier who has his back to the viewer and the woman who is facing him. In the etching, the entire scene has been lit evenly. The print also includes a ruined building, possibly an old fortress, in the background, an element which is not present in the drawing now housed in the Prado Museum.
