Historia

On the origin of this and other preparatory drawings for The Caprices, see the commentary on the first of them, corresponding to Caprice number 1 (Francisco de Goya y Lucientes, painter), and on the one corresponding to Caprice 3 (The bogeyman is Coming).

Line of provenance of this drawing: Javier Goya; Mariano Goya, 1854; Valentín Carderera, ca. 1861; Mariano Carderera, 1880; Prado Museum, 1886.

Análisis artístico

Goya based the drawing we are dealing with here on the one entitled Young Man Sweeping (A.n) from the Sanlúcar Album or  Notebook A .  This is the first preparatory drawing for the engraving Already plucked from the series of The Caprices, which is inverted with respect to the print; it is in the second sketch that the final arrangement for the engraving is designed.

Goya places two young women in the foreground, the first with a diagonally arranged broom, while the second holds it above her head with both hands, as she would later do in the engraving. In the background he sketches the two old men watching the scene, although next to them is a child who looks on in amusement and who does not appear in the print. In addition, there is a background in the drawing that does not appear in the engraving, in which a grille can be made out against which birds are silhouetted in flight.
