This preparatory sketch belonged to the collection of the Countess of Villagonzalo, and now forms part of the Maria Luisa Maldonado collection in Madrid. This work and the sketch entitled the Miracle of Saint Anthony of Padua are the only sketches for the paintings of the Chapel of San Antonio de la Florida that are classed as undisputed works by Goya.
This is a first study that Goya made before tackling the design of the quarter-sphere of the apse in the Chapel of San Antonio de la Florida.
It has some features in common with the final painting, such as the yellowish tone of the divine light that emanates from the Holy Trinity, the symbolic representation of divinity from which a set of rays emerge and fan out.
The angels surrounding the divine symbol are also grouped in a harmonious fashion as in the final piece, although the scale of the definitive painting is increased and the figures brought into the foreground, filling more of the available space. In contrast, the angels in this sketch seem to flit and mill around more, giving this sketch a more energetic rhythm and atmosphere than the final painting.
