This work comes from the Royal Collection. In 1814 it was housed in the Royal Palace in Madrid. It entered the Prado Museum's collection some time before 1834, since it appears in the inventory of the Royal Museum for that year, very probably together with the Family of Charles IV (La familia de Carlos IV). It appears for the first time in the Prado's catalogue in the 1872 edition.
This is one of the ten sketches of individual figures which Goya produced during his visits to Aranjuez in preparation for the group portrait Family of Charles IV. It is one of five housed in the Prado Museum.
The Infante Antonio Pascual (Naples, Italy, 1777-Madrid, 1817) was the son of Charles III and María Amalia of Saxony, and the younger brother of King Charles IV. In 1795 he married the King's daughter, María Amalia of Bourbon, who died three years later.
In this portrait he wears the sash of the Order of Charles III and the badge of the Neapolitan Order of Saint Januarius, as well as the red ribbon of the Order of the Golden Fleece. On his chest he wears the insignia of the Order of Santiago and the Order of Charles III.
