Historia

This work comes from the Royal Collection. In 1814 it was housed in the Royal Palace in Madrid. It entered the Prado Museum's collection some time before 1834, since it appears in the inventory of the Royal Museum for that year, very probably together with the Family of Charles IV (La familia de Carlos IV). It appears for the first time in the Prado's catalogue in the 1872 edition.

Análisis artístico

This is one of the ten sketches of individual figures which Goya produced during his visits to Aranjuez in preparation for the group portrait Family of Charles IV. It is one of five housed in the Prado Museum.

Carlos María Isidro (Madrid, 1788 - Trieste, Italy, 1855) was the son of Charles IV and María Luisa of Parma and second in line to the throne. On the death of his brother Ferdinand VII in 1833 he claimed his right to the crown in opposition to Isabel II, giving rise to the Carlist wars. He died in exile.

The sitter is wearing the sash of the Order of Charles III and the Cross of the Neapolitan Order of Saint Januarius, as well as the red ribbon of the Order of the Golden Fleece.
