Goya made at least five preparatory drawings for the compositions corresponding to Bullfighting, 10 and 11, which depict the historical luck of lance on horseback.

See Charles V spearing a bull in the bullring in Valladolid (1)

According to Matilla, Goya makes no specific reference to the space in which the scene takes place; the spotlight is concentrated on the group, without indicating any background.

Sánchez Cantón considered this design to be one of the preliminary studies for the print The Cid Campeador lancing another bull.

Gassier, for his part, noted the presence of elements common to Charles V. Spearing a Bull in the Bullring of Valladolid and The Cid Campeador Spearing another Bull.

And Sayre catalogued it as a preliminary drawing for Charles V. Spearing a Bull in the Bullring of Valladolid.

Conservación

The drawing is affixed to a second support, a sheet of laid paper, lined with pen, belonging to a French army record book in Spain. The sheet has a fold mark on the vertical axis.
