Análisis artístico

See Five Figures of Men.

In this scene the main protagonists are two men: one in profile, wearing a hat and cloak that he drags along the ground, ant the other, also dressed in a cloak or tunic down to his feet, who addresses him in conversation.

According to Pierre Gassier, based on an interpretation given by Sarah Symmons in 1971, this drawing by Goya is an interpretation of Flaxman's illustration for canto XVII of Purgatorio from Dante's Divine Comedy, which depicts Dante and Virgil conversing about love.

The handling of the fine-tipped brush in this drawing, and in the rest of the drawings in the series, is astonishingly masterful.
