Provenance stamp from the Carderera Collection (ink stamped, lower centre)
The drawing passed by inheritance in 1828 to Javier Goya, the painter's son, and in 1854 to Mariano Goya y Goicoechea, the artist's grandson. It was subsequently owned by Valentín Carderera (ca. 1861). In 1867 it was acquired, along with the rest of the series and other drawings from the Carderera Collection, by the Biblioteca Nacional de España.
Unlike the rest of the scenes in this series based on engraved drawings by John Flaxman, which are characterised by little or no movement, this one is unusually dynamic. In it, two men wearing hats carry away an unconscious or dead woman by her legs and back. This drawing could be compared to Caprice no. 8, Taken Away, which, however, differs in that the woman cries out in an attempt to escape from her abductors.
For the drawing, Goya was inspired by Flaxman's plates 22 and 26, which illustrate the Inferno in Dante's Divine Comedy.
We can see the depiction of what appears to be a hand at the woman's waist. The most characteristic feature of this drawing is the difference in tonality between the men, executed in a very uniform dark wash, and the white body of the woman.
While Pierre Gassier raises some doubts about the authorship of this work, Enrique Lafuente Ferrari gives it as authentically by Goya and as the most Goyaesque of the series. In the Biblioteca Nacional it is considered to be an original by Goya.
