This work belonged to the collection of Edward Habich, in Cassel. It was put on sale in Stuttgart between 27 and 28 April 1899, and it went to the Kupferstich-Kabinett in Dresden.

Here we see a man holding a dog, probably a poodle, and trying to remove some fleas from amidst his fur. The man is wearing a white shirt with the sleeves rolled up to his elbows. The dog's fur is also white, with the artist having left the ivory visible in those parts.
