This painting, along with its companion piece, Charles IV, was commissioned by the Royal Academy of History, through Gaspar Melchor de Jovellanos, to be displayed underneath a canopy in the academy. The two paintings cost six thousand reales, which the painter received in September 1789.
In this portrait, María Luisa de Parma appears standing in half profile, life size. She is wearing a skirt and bodice in greenish hues, decorated with tulle, lace and needlework. The most striking elements, however, are the farthingale and the headdress, which features feathers, ribbons and lace. In her right hand, the sitter holds a closed fan.
On her chest she wears the insignia of the Order of María Luisa. The background is decorated with greenish-coloured drapery and on the table are the crown and the ermine robe, the royal symbols.
