The Family of Philip IV (La familia de Felipe IV)
Dibuxado por Goya del quadro original de Velázquez, que esta en el Rl. Palacio de Madrid ("Drawn by Goya from the original painting by Velázquez in the Royal Palace of Madrid", at the bottom, handwritten in sepia ink). Watermark: Hessels & Vorster.
This work belonged to Juan A. Ceán Bermúdez and then to the Valentín Carderera Collection.
This preparatory drawing for the print shows traces of intermediate tones and subtle details, meant to reproduce the elevated viewpoint and the textures which do not appear in the state proofs. Juan A. Ceán Bermúdez was especially fond of this work, claiming that "...even if it were by Velázquez's own hand I could not hold it in any higher regard".
As with the rest of the unpublished prints, Goya has used red pencil in his preparatory drawing.
