This portrait was the fruit of Goya's one-month stay at the residence of the Infante Luis de Bourbon in Arenas de San Pedro (Ávila), where, as he himself tells us (in a letter to Martín Zapater, dated 20th September 1783), he painted portraits of the infante, his wife María Teresa and their children, Luis María and María Teresa.
This work came from the Palace of Boadilla del Monte (Madrid). It later belonged to the Duke and Duchess of San Fernando and then to a private collection in Monaco.
María Teresa de Vallabriga is shown standing, in half profile, with her body turned slightly to one side and with her arms resting on the back of an armchair. She is wearing a black and red court-style dress, complete with lace edging, and has her hair gathered up in a headdress decorated with feathers.
In the background, seen through the arch of a gallery, is a hazy landscape. María Teresa's face is serious and precisely rendered, unlike her hair and clothes, which are painted in a freer style.
It was previously thought that this work formed a pair with another portrait, of the Infante Don Luis (Cleveland Museum of Art), but the other work is now considered to be the work of Mengs.
