Historia

On the gestation, history and aims of the series known as Dreams, a set of preparatory drawings for The Caprices, see Dream 1: Universal Language.

Line of provenance of the present drawing: Javier Goya; Mariano Goya, 1854; Valentín Carderera, ca. 1861; Mariano Carderera, 1880; Prado Museum, 1886

Análisis artístico

Preparatory drawing for the etching of Caprice 54, The Shameless Man.  It depicts a deformed man whose head comes out of his breeches, with a face in which the nose resembles a phallus, a satire of man's lust.

There are slight variations between the print and the preparatory drawing, commented on by Matilla: in the print he wears trousers, while in the drawing he does not. Furthermore, in the print a third figure appears in the scene. It is also the only drawing in the series in which red ink wash is mixed with pen.
