In the Prado Museum has examples of preparatory drawings from all the series of engravings Goya produced throughout his career. Almost all of them, with a few exceptions, come from the collection of Valentín Carderera (1796-1880), whose heir, Mariano Carderera, sold a lot of 284 preparatory drawings to the Prado Museum in 1866. The Prado Museum has 75 of the preparatory drawings for the Disasters of War series, some of which, such as Women Surprised by Soldiers, were never engraved.
Line of provenance: Javier Goya, 1828; Mariano Goya, 1854; Valentín Carderera, ca. 1861; Mariano Carderera, 1880; Prado Museum, 12/11/1886.
See Women surprised by soldiers.
Same subject and architectural setting as the previous drawing in this series, also entitled Transporting the Wounded to Hospital. Pierre Gassier praised the skill of the staging of the harrowing episode: the transport of two wounded men to hospital after a battle. A group of survivors carry two dying victims, who have been brightly lit to highlight them from their rescuers and the surrounding shadows. The episode takes place in a covered loggia with a large gallery of arches on the right side of the composition, through which a strong light enters, identical to that used by Goya in Disaster no. 13, Bitter Presence. The powerful chiaroscuro accentuates the drama of the scene, which Goya has given spatial depth thanks to the perspective created by the large arcade under which the figures are sheltered.
