This is a preparatory study for the final portrait. It was in the collection of the Marquis of La Torrecilla, followed by that of the Count and Countess of Villagonzalo, and was finally inherited by its current owners.
In this oil sketch of the head of the Duke of San Carlos we can see in greater detail the sitter's physiognomy and its characteristic features such as the sharp, curved nose, the prominent lower jaw and the short-sightedness expressed by his strained gaze. Goya was extremely careful to represent the duke with realism whilst at the same time smoothing out his defects, which is probably why he made this preparatory study of the subject's head. The short bust portrait we see here pays little attention to the details of the duke's dress coat or the medals and other elements, which are all depicted only sketchily, if at all.
The sketch is very similar in appearance to those made for the group portrait The Family of Charles IV, with the reddish primer left clearly visible.
