Historia

The drawing passed by inheritance in 1828 to Javier Goya, the painter's son, and in 1854 to Mariano Goya y Goicoechea, the artist's grandson. It was subsequently owned by Valentín Carderera (ca. 1861) and Mariano Carderera (ca. 1880). In 1886 it was acquired from Mariano Carderera by the General Direction of Public Instruction and was assigned to the Prado Museum, where it entered on 12 November 1886.

Análisis artístico

Unlike the old, decrepit witches depicted in some of the Caprices, this drawing features the figure of a young witch who, completely naked, rides through the air towards a coven on the back of a billy goat which, in turn, rides over two old witches carrying torches to illuminate the dark path. According to Gassier, a similar type of nude would be found in the first version of the allegorical theme Truth, Time and History (sketch) and in two associated drawings: Truth Rescued by Time and Truth. Technically, it is a drawing made with rapid brushstrokes in which the red wash stands out against the whiteness of the young witch's body.
