Historia

This is a preparatory drawing for the tapestry cartoons Hunter Loading his Shotgun and Hunter and his Dogs. It was recorded as belonging to Charles H. Tyler in 1933, after which it entered the collection where it remains today.

Análisis artístico

The two sketched figures of the hunters appear on the same sheet of paper. The fact that they are placed together suggests that Goya sketched the figures from life. Arnaiz (1987) points out that this detail suggests that the composition was designed by Goya and not his brother-in-law Francisco Bayeu, whose name appears on the invoice issued to the Royal Tapestry Factory for this series of tapestry cartoons.

The two figures are almost identical in the cartoons, except in the case of the hunter loading his rifle with one leg resting on a rock, whose foot is hidden by a dog in the painting.
