Line of provenance: Javier Goya, Mariano Goya, Valentín Carderera (ca. 1861), Mariano Carderera (1880). The Directorate General of Public Instruction, which acquired the collection of Goya drawings owned by Mariano Carderera, assigned it to the Prado Museum by Royal Order of 12 November 1886.

Análisis artístico

See Young woman with forehead wearing a small hat.

Tender scene in which the Duchess of Alba is shown seated with the little black girl María de la Luz on her lap, as if cradling her. The origin of this child is unknown, although the protection she exercised over her was known to her contemporaries, as the poet Quintana dedicated some verses to her. She also directed her maternal love towards the son of her butler Don Tomás de Berganza, Luis. Both children were at the head of the legatees instituted by the Duchess in her will. Carderera expressly alludes to the subject depicted: she is seen seated, holding in her arms a black child she had taken under her protection.

On the front of the sheet is the drawing Girl dancing to the sound of a guitar.
