Goya (bottom left-hand corner)
See The mourning and The celebrated American.
This is the second of the prints in the series, which tells the story of the fatal goring of the bullfighter Pepe Hillo in the bullring of Madrid in 1801, a subject already dealt with in three etchings in The Bullfighting: in number 33, The unfortunate death of Pepe Illo in the bullring in Madrid, and in the letters E, Death of Pepe Illo (2nd composition) and F, Death of Pepe Illo (3rd composition) of the unpublished ones.
On the right, a standing stallion takes cover behind his fallen horse to attack the bull with his pike and try to get him to let go of the gored rider, who is lying limp on the bull's head. Another stallion, on the left and on his mount, comes to wound the bull with his pike. Part of the arena is deserted, while in the background, on the left, behind a wounded stallion, a shapeless mass of spectators is gathered.
