Madmen (Locos)
Historia
See Maja and Celestina.
This miniature belonged to Luis Portilla. He put it up for sale in Madrid, together with others that were in his possession, on 16 December 1880. It was acquired by Count Gregorio Stroganoff. Its current whereabouts are unknown.
Análisis artístico
For the artistic and technical analysis of the complete series, see Maja and Celestina.
In this miniature we see the subject of mental illness represented very directly by a group of lunatics. This was a subject that Goya had already addressed in his social critique The Madhouse. Depicted here are six people, all either naked or dressed in rags, as in the earlier work, adopting various contorted poses.
